Build Your Own Street Luge

Streetluging isn’t for the faint hearted, and even though doing it may seem like a walk in the park, it’s a dangerous and individuals have ended up with serious injuries, or worse.

This article is not all about to discuss that.

Learning how to build your own street luge is not that difficult.  Prior to street luge boards being available in store, they were custom created, many people,of course, still desire to build their own luge boards so that it can have that distinct touch of individuality and flair. So here we go.

How To Build Your Own Street Luge

To build your luge boards, you are going to require:

  • Sheet Metal
  • Nuts and Bolts
  • Saw
  • Measuring Tape
  • 2×4’s
  • Eight skateboard wheels
  • Plywood
  • Drill
  • Skateboard Trucks
  • Old Carpet
  • Screwdriver
  • Super glue

All of this is readily available at Home Depot.

Tips

1.Begin by utilizing the saw in order to cut the 2×4’ into 3 sections. Each of the section should be 2 inches longer than each part of your body. It’s going to make it easier to make sure that the 2×4; overlap and will make for additional luge board.

Street Luge 101

Today the athletes who participate in modern street luge rocket down steep paved slopes on boards that are 1.5 meters long. Wearing leather bodysuits and motorcycles helmets, these racers can reach speeds that exceed 125 kilometers per hour. It goes without saying that this is an extremely fast speed for a vehicle that does not make any use of propulsion. In fact, along with downhill skateboard racing (which is not to be confused with street style skateboarding), street luge is considered to be a ‘gravity sport’.

Street luge is a spectacular spectator sport as well, and dramatic collisions and spill outs are common. However, it should be noted that given the advancements in technology and proper safety equipment the sport is a lot less riskier than it looks at first glance. The wild days of unregulated racing at Signal Hill (in fact, those races were suspended after only a couple of years due to the number of serious accidents!)

Here are the technical specifications of a modern street luge for racing:

Chasis

The chasis is made out of aluminum, wood, or composite materials. The legs are supported at the position of the thighs, and the head support rests under the nape of the neck. Certain models also incorporate mounted fairings and other aerodynamic features.

Axles

These are similar to standard skateboard trucks, only much longer.

Wheels

Again, these are similar to urethane skateboard wheels only much larger. Whereas skateboarders don’t tend to ride wheels that exceed 58 mm, street luge wheels range between 70 and 90 mm. Street luge wheels are also much softer than skateboard wheels, and have a hardness of around 80 A on the ‘Shore scale’. Softer wheels provide far greater grip on paved surfaces.
